Amethyst is the purple colored quartz stone that is often used in jewelry. It grows in crystal formations in geodes and is quite a common stone.

This quartz has been used as a gem since ancient Egyptian times. It has many superstitions connected with it, which give it a fascinating history.

The name „amethyst” comes from the ancient Greek for „not intoxicated,” as it was believed that it could keep its carrier from getting drunk. For this reason the ancient Greeks and Romans made goblets of amethyst, believing that wine drunk from such a cup could not cause drunkenness.

The orb contains a 4cm amethyst of exquisite color, and the Royal Scepter and the coronet of the Prince of Wales are both studded with the stone as well.

The amethyst used to be considered quite valuable, but its worth has decreaded significantly over the years as more and more deposits of the mineral have been found, particularly in Brazil. The highest grade amethyst is known as the „Deep Russian” and even though it is extremely rare, its worth is still a great deal lower than that of high grade sapphires or rubies.

These days, amethyst is the birthstone for the month of February. It is also the stone traditionally assosciated with the sixth year anniversary. These are two great occasions to make an amethyst the focus of your gift giving.

Amethyst is found in all types of popular jewelry today.
